Welcome #Madamegrowers to a new post on our blog. This time we are going to discuss the regulation of cannabis by country, that is, we are going to indicate in which country cannabis is legalised.

At Madamegrow we are very curious and we want to know all the places on the planet where cannabis is legalised. To do so, we have drawn up a list of cannabis regulation by country.

WORLD MAP OF CANNABIS

Before starting with our list of countries that allow the consumption and sale of marijuana, we analyse the status of cannabis for personal use and medical cannabis. Legalising marijuana has always provoked controversy and debate for decades.  There are many bills and laws that allow the cultivation, possession and consumption of cannabis, but they are not the same for all countries.

Let’s make three lists: Countries where marijuana is legal, countries where medical marijuana is legal, but not its recreational use, and countries that do not allow the sale of medical marijuana, but do allow its derivative.

COUNTRIES WHERE MARIJUANA IS LEGAL

Uruguay

Uruguay could be confirmed as the country with the most advanced marijuana laws. Located in the south of Latin America, this country, along with Canada, is one of the most advanced countries in legalising marijuana.

It was in 2013 that consumption was permitted in Uruguay, the first country in the world to legalise marijuana for both medicinal and recreational use. The state itself has a law to regulate production, consumption and takes into account the small grower who uses marijuana for both personal and medicinal use.

By having a law that allows the sale of marijuana, Uruguay has managed to reduce the sale and purchase of marijuana on the black market.

Canada

As mentioned above, Canada is on the world cannabis map as the country with the most advanced legislation. In the early 2000s, the health ministry introduced a bill allowing the use of medical cannabis for patients with serious illnesses. It was not until 2018 that it was approved to legalise the use of marijuana for recreational purposes, with a maximum possession of 30 GRAMS. Companies can produce marijuana and cannabis derivatives as long as they have a permit from the state.

South Africa

Like Canada, in 2018 the Constitutional Court of South Africa declared the law prohibiting the consumption and cultivation of cannabis for personal and private use as null and void. Both medicinal and recreational cannabis use is now permitted.

Netherlands

The fame of marijuana use in this country is worldwide. The Netherlands is one of the countries with the most modern, but at the same time contradictory, regulations. Since the 1970s, personal consumption of marijuana has been allowed in cannabis social clubs, better known as coffeeshops (small quantities). It is a country that is struggling to legalise marijuana, however, cultivation is prohibited and is not as advanced as in other countries.

Countries where medical marijuana is legal, but not for recreational use

New Zealand

In 2018, New Zealand became a country that allows the use of medical cannabis in patients with a prescription, for illnesses that are beneficial to alleviate pain. Two years later, a referendum was held to legalise recreational use for personal consumption. These bills coincide with the general elections in New Zealand, which aims to pass a law on its consumption, not for those under 20 years of age. With maximum quantities for possession and another for self-cultivation. It also incorporates an educational programme to raise awareness about marijuana consumption.

Australia

Five years ago a modification of the 1967 Narcotic Drugs Act was passed, a law to regulate access to medical marijuana, as long as the state can control it. In 2019 Canberra passed a law allowing cannabis for personal/recreational use.

Czech Republic

The Czech Republic passed a law to regulate the dispensation of cannabis products to patients with illnesses requiring treatment. The state itself is responsible for managing cultivation, purchase and distribution. This medical cannabis is usually prescribed to patients with Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis or cancer. Self-cultivation is limited to 5 plants per household.

United States

In the United States it is a strange case, as federal law prohibits any use of cannabis in the country. However, almost thirty states have already authorised medical cannabis and cannabis derivatives. Another ten states have legalised recreational marijuana use

Germany

A bill legalising the use of medical cannabis comes into force in 2017. The production and distribution process is handled by a state-owned company. But it should be noted that most of the marijuana grams come from abroad.

Chile

The Chilean parliament passed a law to regulate the criminalisation of self-cultivation for personal consumption and medical purposes. The maximum number of plants is 6 per house and cannabis products are legalised.

Mexico

Mexico passed a law allowing the use of medical cannabis in 2017, the ministry of health is in charge of production. A year later the proposal to legalise personal and recreational use came out, while also encouraging responsible use in order to eliminate the presence of some of the more dangerous cartels.

Israel

In 2007, the use of medical cannabis was approved, as long as there is a medical prescription. And in 2018 a law was passed allowing the export of medical marijuana products and plants.

Thailand

In 2018 the Thai parliament approved the regularisation of the import, export and production of medical cannabis. For the consumption of this drug, a medical prescription is always required.

In December 2018, the Thai parliament passed a law regulating the import, export and production of medical cannabis. Always under medical prescription, this law has made Thailand the leading country in the regulation of cannabis in Asia.

Italy

In 2013 Italy passed a law creating a state cannabis body, authorising medical cannabis for patients with a prescription. When they realised that the import of this material was very high, the Italian government decided to start cultivating in their own country.

Countries that do not allow the sale of medical marijuana, but do allow the sale of cannabis derivatives.

Luxembourg

The consumption of medical marijuana was approved in 2018, and this material was distributed in hospitals and pharmacies in the form of pills, balms and oils. A bill to regulate recreational use was formulated a few years ago, but this issue seems to have stalled.

Denmark

Denmark approved the use of medical marijuana derivatives containing CBD through the Danish Medicines Agency in 2011. These cannabis derivatives are mainly balms and creams. Years later, a law was passed allowing companies to produce medical cannabis.

United Kingdom

United Kingdom passed the law in 2018 allowing the prescription of cannabis-derived medicines for patients with very serious illnesses. It is often very beneficial for pain or to help patients rest.
