Durban Pois: the South African sativa with a note of anise

Durban Pois (German Fem Line) by Black Elephant Genetics has its roots in the coastal sativas of South Africa, a family adapted to intense sun and known for ripening earlier than most pure sativas. It comes from the cross Mint Jelly Auto x Durban Pois Het and keeps a very marked sativa dominance (90%): slender plants with long internodes and narrow leaves, and elongated flowers that load up with resin. Its signature is the aroma, spicy and sweet, with a fruity touch and a very recognisable note of anise and incense.

Indoor cultivation

Indoors it reaches 0.8-1.4 m and, like any true sativa, it stretches clearly during the first weeks of flowering. It is worth topping it once or twice during growth and guiding its branches with LST or a SCROG net to make the most of the available height and form a flat canopy. This way it yields 400-550 g/m² after 8-9 weeks of flowering. We recommend a light, well-draining substrate, regular pH control (6.0-6.5 in soil), moderate watering, good air circulation and an activated carbon filter, as its spicy aroma becomes noticeable from mid-flowering.

Outdoor cultivation

Outdoors it grows vigorously to 1.5-3 m and can yield up to 650 g per plant. It feels at home in warm, bright climates with dry autumns, where it completes ripening without hurry and is harvested in mid-October. Plant it in an open, sunny spot, stake it before the branches gain weight to protect it from the wind and leave enough space between plants for air to flow around its flowers.

Aroma and flavour

A profile unlike the usual citrus sativas: when the flowers are rubbed, a spicy, sweet burst comes first, followed by a fruity background. In the second half of flowering its most characteristic trait takes over, a fresh note of anise that blends with resinous hints of incense and leaves a long, spicy finish.
