<\/span><\/h2>\nBefore starting with our list of countries that allow the consumption and sale of marijuana<\/strong>, we analyse the status of cannabis for personal use and medical cannabis. Legalising marijuana has always provoked controversy and debate for decades.\u00a0 There are many bills and laws that allow the cultivation, possession and consumption of cannabis, but they are not the same for all countries.<\/p>\nLet’s make three lists: Countries where marijuana is legal, countries where medical marijuana is legal, but not its recreational use, and countries that do not allow the sale of medical marijuana, but do allow its derivative.<\/p>\n
<\/span>COUNTRIES WHERE MARIJUANA IS LEGAL<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/span>Uruguay<\/span><\/h3>\nUruguay could be confirmed as the country with the most advanced marijuana laws<\/strong>. Located in the south of Latin America, this country, along with Canada, is one of the most advanced countries in legalising marijuana.<\/p>\nIt was in 2013 that consumption was permitted in Uruguay, the first country in the world to legalise marijuana for both medicinal and recreational use. The state itself has a law to regulate production, consumption and takes into account the small grower who uses marijuana for both personal and medicinal use.<\/p>\n
By having a law that allows the sale of marijuana, Uruguay has managed to reduce the sale and purchase of marijuana on the black market.<\/p>\n
<\/span>Canada<\/span><\/h3>\nAs mentioned above, Canada is on the world cannabis map as the country with the most advanced legislation. In the early 2000s, the health ministry introduced a bill allowing the use of medical cannabis for patients with serious illnesses. It was not until 2018 that it was approved to legalise the use of marijuana for recreational purposes, with a maximum possession of 30 GRAMS<\/strong>. Companies can produce marijuana and cannabis derivatives as long as they have a permit from the state.<\/p>\n<\/span>South Africa<\/span><\/h3>\nLike Canada, in 2018 the Constitutional Court of South Africa declared the law prohibiting the consumption and cultivation of cannabis for personal and private use as null and void. Both medicinal and recreational cannabis<\/strong> use is now permitted.<\/p>\n<\/span>Netherlands<\/span><\/h3>\nThe fame of marijuana use in this country is worldwide. The Netherlands is one of the countries with the most modern, but at the same time contradictory, regulations. Since the 1970s, personal consumption of marijuana has been allowed in cannabis social clubs, better known as coffeeshops (small quantities). It is a country that is struggling to legalise marijuana, however, cultivation is prohibited and is not as advanced as in other countries.<\/p>\n
<\/span>Countries where medical marijuana is legal, but not for recreational use<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/span>New Zealand<\/span><\/h3>\nIn 2018, New Zealand became a country that allows the use of medical cannabis in patients with a prescription<\/strong>, for illnesses that are beneficial to alleviate pain. Two years later, a referendum was held to legalise recreational use for personal consumption. These bills coincide with the general elections in New Zealand, which aims to pass a law on its consumption, not for those under 20 years of age. With maximum quantities for possession and another for self-cultivation. It also incorporates an educational programme to raise awareness about marijuana consumption.<\/p>\n<\/span>Australia<\/span><\/h3>\nFive years ago a modification of the 1967 Narcotic Drugs Act was passed, a law to regulate access to medical marijuana, as long as the state can control it. <\/span>Germany\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\nA bill legalising the use of medical cannabis comes into force in 2017. The production and distribution process is handled by a state-owned company. But it should be noted that most of the marijuana grams come from abroad.<\/p>\n
<\/span>Chile<\/span><\/h3>\nThe Chilean parliament passed a law to regulate the criminalisation of self-cultivation for personal consumption and medical purposes. <\/span>Thailand<\/span><\/h3>\nIn 2018 the Thai parliament approved the regularisation of the import, export and production of medical cannabis. For the consumption of this drug, a medical prescription is always required.<\/p>\n
